Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has turned the sod to begin construction on Melbourne's first "vertical" public school.
The new South Melbourne Primary School on Ferrars Street will be five storeys high with a netball court and a playground nearby.
The school will begin taking enrolments late next year before opening its doors at the start of the 2018 school year.
Kane Constructions has commenced an early works package comprising ground works and piling.
