This project involved a major expansion of the existing emergency department as well as construction of a special care nursery at the Northern Hospital in Epping in Melbourne's outer north.

Kane Constructions were appointed as Construction Manager for the $15 million project in mid-2012.

Works comprised multiple work fronts requiring new areas to be completed to enable existing areas to be decanted prior to the following stage commencing.

Integration with existing services and the installation of new services infrastructure required careful planning to eliminate any risk to hospital operations.

The project spanned across five departments within the Northern Hospital and consisted of over 23 individual stages, while ensuring no impact on services and operation to the rest of the hospital.

Upon completion, the project consisted of the following:

- Emergency Department: two resus/trauma bays, two resus bays inc. peads resus, isolation room, X-ray, 18 patient beds, two mental health bays, upgrade to peads, new central assessment, new RITZ, new reception, first floor offices, plantroom and associated amenities

- Special Care Nursery: 16 standard cot bays, four high dependency cot bays, two isolation rooms, two resus bays, parents overnight room, offices and associated amenities

- Paediatrics: 11 patient beds with ensuites, two isolation rooms, playroom, courtyard, associated amenities and upgrade to existing peads, plantroom and new Ronald McDonald family room

- Upgrades to the existing maternity ward and birthing suites were carried out over five stages

This project reached practical completion in July 2014.
