$70m Swinburne ATC on the rise

28th September, 2009

With both tower cranes now in place, the Swinburne University ATC project is on the rise.

The Swinburne University Advanced Technology Centre is rapidly rising from what was not long ago a large hole at the Hawthorn Campus.

A major project milestone was achieved during September with completion of the four transfer beams located at Level 3 of the north-west tower. The beams measure 30.0m long by 2.4m wide by 3.0m deep and span over a 500+ seat auditorium. The beams were poured in-situ and together with the suspended slab contain 1100m3 of concrete.

Careful planning by the Kane Project Team ensured over 250 construction vehicle movements occurred over a two day period with no disruption to busy Burwood Road.

The new facility will contain state of the art research and teaching spaces with a cutting edge Smart Structures Laboratory.

Upon completion in late 2010 the ATC will be one of the first 5-star Green Star facilities to be located at an Australian University.
