aerlier this month Sydneysiders flocked to the premiere of the Darlinghurst Theatre Company’s opening show at the Eternity Playhouse following its $8 million transformation by the City of Sydney.
The theatre, designed by TGZ Architects and built by Kane Constructions, was a former Victorian-era church, the Burton Street Tabernacle.
Heritage features, such as stained glass windows, were restored to their former glory, while wooden floorboards and doors were reused in other parts of the building.
During the works, the City uncovered the original Victorian highly-decorative timber ceiling, which had been covered over with plaster and horse hair during the early 20th century, presumably because the intricate work was out of fashion.
The Eternity Playhouse is named after the late Arthur Stace, a former tabernacle parishioner who wrote the word ‘Eternity’ in chalk on Sydney’s streets from the 1930s to the 1950s.
