On a typically balmy December evening in Queensland, the Sunshine Coast Airport terminal redevelopment was officially opened by Mayor Bob Abbott.
The new departure lounge was taken over for the event after the last flight had left for the day. Over one hundred people attended the celebration including State and Federal MP's, Councillors and local business people.
The Mayor specifically congratulated the Kane team on a tremendous effort to deliver the project on time. With the custom-made carpet (depicting the Maroochy river) arriving only two days before the opening, the team put in a huge effort to ensure it was laid in time.
The project consisted of the redevelopment of the departure lounge, including demolition of existing sections of the building and alterations to the check-in area, covered plaza area and new walkways and services. A significant portion of the work was completed out-of-ours to ensure seamless continuity for the airport operations.
Besides the final completion date, the other significant project milestone was the relocation of the security screening, which due to federal security compliance was scheduled months in advance.
Despite a last minute architectural decision to remove a structural column adjacent the entry - the milestone was achieved. The completed facility includes several new retail outlets and provides vastly improved functionality and amenity to ensure Sunshine Coast Airport remains one of the most significant regional airports in Australia.
