Removal of the roof top tower crane marks yet another project milestone on the $25m Novotel on Collins project.
novotel on collins1.jpgKane Constructions was awarded this logistically challenging design and construct contract in September 2008. The project comprises the addition of five levels of infill structure to accommodate 65 new hotel rooms at the Novotel on Collins in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. Works also include a major refurbishment of the Australia on Collins retail precinct.
The project was serviced by a tower crane located on a rooftop grillage with all lifts taking place from busy Collins Street. The crane, a fixture on the CBD skyline for the past eleven months was dismantled over the weekend.
Weeks of detailed planning by the Kane Project Team involving the numerous stakeholders including City of Melbourne, Yarra Trams, VicRoads, CitiPower and centre management ensured the operation ran like clockwork.
Works commenced late on Friday evening with the closure of Collins Street between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets. Trams were re-routed, tram lines were de-energised and traffic management extended for a number of city blocks surrounding the site. Three franna cranes and a 200t mobile crane were utilised to recover the tower crane and associated components including the three level high gantry.
Crews worked through the weekend without issue with Collins Street returning to 'business as usual' early on Monday morning.
A tremendous effort by the Kane Project Team at Novotel on Collins with focus now directed at pushing the fitout works ahead of the June 2010 completion.
