In the last quarter of 2020, Kane Constructions was awarded the $76 million Lump Sum contract to deliver the Wonthaggi Hospital Expansion Project.
The project involves the construction of a new three storey hospital facility adjacent to the existing facility including three new operating theatres, day procedure room, central sterilising department (CSSD), new emergency department with 18 additional treatment spaces, and a new 32-bed inpatient ward to meet the capacity to treat 26,000 extra emergency patients each year.
The project involves a high degree of interfacing with the existing live facility with services and infrastructure upgrades, future expansion and improved reliability of existing services.
This expansion will help the Bass Coast Shire community receive the same standard and access to healthcare as metropolitan communities and support a booming population. The Bass Coast Shire population is one of the fastest growing areas with population expected to more than double by 2031.
Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale said every Victorian deserves quality care, close to home.
“We are a growing community with many families choosing the Bass Coast to call home… this project is ensuring Wonthaggi Hospital can meet that growing demand… a bigger, better Wonthaggi Hospital will deliver just that for our local community.”
The redevelopment will create up to 345 local jobs during the peak of construction, and is set to reach Practical Completion in early 2023.
