Kane Constructions is excited to have handed over its fourth building as part of the University of Melbourne Student Precinct project – the Arts and Cultural Building!
A vibrant cultural hub and the new home of the iconic Union and Guild Theatres, the Arts and Cultural Building promotes connectedness through arts, culture and music.
The impressive new building includes 7,147m2 of new floor space, a 400 seat state-of-the-art main theatre with a fly tower, and an additional small flexible theatre with 100 retractable seats, overhead gantries and a control room.
The building includes two purpose-built rehearsal rooms, a motorised orchestra pit with three different performance modes, and an oversized heavy-duty theatre lift for large production equipment.
The multi-faceted façade is made up of GRC, curved glass, aluminium and precast 3D prisms and an aluminium mesh scrim. The triple-height atrium has three escalators and galvanised steel stairs with leather upholstered seats and balustrade.
The Arts and Cultural Building is designed to support inclusion, setting a new benchmark for theatre spaces that aim to deliver a truly welcoming and inclusive experience for all.
The building is on track to receive a 6-Star Green Star building accreditation.
The Student Precinct Project will be completed at the end of 2022, encompassing six buildings and extensive precinct landscaping and an amphitheatre.
