The newly built Lakeside Visitor Centre at Victoria’s world-famous Puffing Billy Railway has been awarded the highest honour at the 2022 International Architecture Awards in Chicago.
Designed by TERROIR, the Lakeside Visitor Centre is Australia’s premier preserved steam railway that celebrates the rich history through a collection of steam-era artefacts and an immersive multimedia experience.
The project had unique challenges including water main diversion, environmental sensitivities for protected tree species, a highly restricted site access and the installation of a 120-year-old locomotive engine. All works were carried out whilst the existing facilities remained operational with live train movements.
Since its opening in December last year the centre has drawn thousands of people to Victoria and the heart of the Dandenong Ranges.
The International Architecture Awards is the world’s foremost international distinguished building, landscape, architecture and urbanism awards program. A jury of international designers selected over 150 submissions from a shortlist of over 650 projects.
“We are honoured to receive this prestigious award, which has been a labour of love for so many of us, including the teams at TERRIOR Architects and Kane Constructions.”
“This accolade not only celebrates the creation of our world-class visitor centre but also helps put Puffing Billy on the global stage.”
Puffing Billy Railway CEO Peter Abbott
