Kane Constructions was engaged under a Lump Sum contract to deliver the existing car park extension of the ALDI store at Gympie, central Queensland.
Construction works consisted of a large suspended car park facing toward the Bruce Highway. Works included general lighting and stormwater extensions, and a large sewer rising main that required the main sewer branch servicing South Gympie to be temporarily disabled whilst works were undertaken. The existing car park required operational continuity throughout the works, which Kane successfully achieved.
The car park extension includes a “Gympie Gold” coloured structural steel feature wall to restrict the view under the car park from the adjacent main thoroughfare that is the Bruce Highway. Soft landscaping works were completed to the surrounds of the car park, including creeper plants on trellises connected between the structural steel transoms. This highlights the artistic green feature wall.
The greatest challenge that the team faced was working on a steep terrain. The team implemented a highly successful system to manage this challenge, which required benching to achieve safe platforms for formwork to be constructed. Access was restricted to a single vehicle width path alongside the existing car park that meandered down a steep easement to the actual car park extension site.
The completed suspended deck provides the ALDI Stores facility an additional 50 car spaces for the community and its customers.
