In late November 2018, Kane Constructions was awarded the prestigious Deakin University Waurn Ponds Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) Stage 2 Main Works project after an intense six-week Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) phase.
The project entailed the design and construction of a cutting-edge facility at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds Campus. This new 3,000m² building unifies the Institute for Intelligent Systems Research and Innovation (IISRI) staff, who were previously dispersed across three separate buildings on campus.
The project encompassed specialised laboratory spaces totaling 600m², including a Haptics Lab, EEG Lab, and Neural Labs. Additionally, it featured 1,200m² of prototyping spaces such as TRL Boost Space, Rapid Prototyping, and Electronics. A secure 'Secret' space of 125m² was integrated alongside essential amenities like lunch rooms, circulation spaces, back-of-house plant room facilities, and associated external works.
The new facility is designed to support a wide range of advanced activities including 3D printing, prototyping, robotics testing, and neural and cognitive research. It also houses administrative spaces to support the institute's operations.
The IISRI Stage 2 Main Works project achieved Practical Completion in the fourth quarter of 2019, delivering a state-of-the-art research hub for Deakin University.
