Kane Constructions QLD was engaged in September 2021 under a Lump Sum contract by the Department of Education to deliver the Ithaca Creek State School New General Learning Centre.
The new Learning Centre was constructed in two stages within the existing and operational Ithaca Creek State School, located at Bardon in Brisbane’s inner-western suburbs.
Stage 1 consisted of the refurbishment of the existing A Block offices, staffroom and first aid room.
Stage 2 works consisted of the demolition of the existing heritage tennis courts and construction of a new two-storey general learning area (GLA) building with an undercroft space available for undercover activities.
The new GLA building comprises eight classrooms, two PLA kitchenettes, five breakout spaces, amenities, an undercroft, and an outdoor tennis court. The open voids throughout the building create a spacious feel and allow light to access darker areas.
Kane constructed a covered walkway to link the existing and new facilities.
Kane overcame a few challenges to preserve the heritage status of the building. The heritage stairs on the north side of the building were protected during construction to prevent damage to significant ply hoardings.
The tennis court represents the previous heritage court laid there before the building was built. There are also line markings in the undercroft replicating the second court that was previously in its place.
This was all undertaken within an operational school environment as well as being in close proximity to neighbouring properties, Kane was acutely aware of the environment and surroundings throughout the entirety of the project. Plant movement in and out of the site was only undertaken during specified hours.
