In June 2021, Kane Constructions was awarded the $13 million Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) Early Works project under a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) contract.
The project involved the construction management of the early works phase for the ACMD building at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne. As Australia’s first hospital-based biomedical engineering research facility, the ACMD represents a groundbreaking initiative in medical innovation, and the early works were crucial in setting the stage for its development.
The scope of work encompassed several complex tasks. This included the disconnection and diversion of existing infrastructure and services from the Aikenhead Wing Building, Daly Wing Infill Building, and Brenan Hall. Façade protection works were installed for the Daly Wing Building, ensuring the integrity of heritage elements during construction. The project also involved managing the diversion and relocation of overhead assets along Victoria Parade and Nicholson Street, as well as coordinating with authorities to relocate existing bus stops.
Key demolition works included the full demolition of the Aikenhead Wing and Daly Wing Infill Building, which required the safe removal of hazardous materials. Brenan Hall underwent a partial demolition, with careful attention to retaining its façade while also managing hazardous material removal.
Kane Constructions successfully completed the ACMD Early Works project, achieving Practical Completion in March 2023, paving the way for the construction of Australia’s first collaborative biomedical engineering research facility.
