Completed in July 2011, this project delivered significant additions and alterations to the University of Melbourne's Medley Hall student college.
The existing three historically significant buildings were furbished and linked by a new entry atrium. An additional floor for student accommodation was added above the rear building, along with complete services, updated kitchen facilities as well as accessibility compliance and fire safety upgrades.
The new glazed and louvred atrium provides a voluminous contemporary space which clearly delineates between the heritage and the contemporary elements of the site. The atrium provides a light-filled space employing sustainable ventilation principles through the use of a sub-surface rockstore.
The existing buildings have been rejuvenated throughout with new floor finishes, wall finishes, ceilings and service upgrades including an essential maintenance overhaul. All heritage works were undertaken with approval from Heritage Victoria
